Description
To provide background and practical knowledge in the surveying of buildings for the presence of Asbestos and any necessary bulk sampling that may be required. The module is at a proficiency level, which aims to provide the student with the practical knowledge and skills to be able to carry out the stated work.

Asbestos in Buildings
Types and uses of asbestos in buildings, Surveys of asbestos containing materials in buildings, Risk assessment of asbestos containing materials in buildings, Management of asbestos containing materials in buildings

Bulk Sampling
Sampling strategy & methods, sampling frequency, sampling techniques, health, safety and quality procedures.
 
Educational Objectives
The student should be able to describe the uses of asbestos in buildings and the public health risk these might pose. The student should understand the principles of and requirements for: asbestos surveys, risk assessment and risk management strategies and their role in reducing health risks. The student should have a detailed knowledge of the approved methods of sampling of bulk asbestos.
 
Assessment
Practical work in carrying out building surveys: a mock survey including data collection, material risk assessment and use of asbestos survey and management databases* A practical assessment carried out by an independent assessor will include: a photographic assessment for identifying the presence of asbestos in different locations, taking samples, bagging and labelling samples, making safe, use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective Equipment (RPE).
Practical Assessment can be taken separately at £195 +VAT
 
Examination
A 45 multi-choice question exam paper (1hr 15mns) will be undertaken on the final day of the course. This exam will be independently invigilated by BOHS and is subject to a separate BOHS exam fee of £100
 
Evidence of Field Proviciency
To gain the Proficiency Certificate in this subject evidence of field proficiency will need to be demonstrated. This will normally be by the submission of TWO survey reports which demonstrate the candidates’ ability to carry out building surveys or alternatively demonstrate these have been carried out under supervision. The surveys must include sampling (type 2 or 3) and should be submitted within 6 months of the examination to the BOHS Secretariat at Derby . Further details and guidance will be provided within the course.
 
Certification
BOHS P402 Proficiency Certificate – for Asbestos surveying in accordance with HSE Guidance Note MDHS100 (Type1 ,2 & 3 surveys)
 

N.B. Candidates must pass the exam and the practical assessment. They will then have to submit two written survey reports to BOHS for assessment before they can be awarded the BOHS P402 proficiency certificate
