Description
This course provides managers and supervisors with a theoretical and practical understanding of how to review and manage their own departmental systems as appropriate to ensure safety in their company’s workplace.

- MODULE 1: Course aims and overview - Safety management models and standards (HSG 65, OSHAS 18001)
- MODULE 2: Reactive monitoring -Trend analysis - Accident investigation - Techniques and reporting
- MODULE 3: Risk assessment - Legal requirements - Risk assessment in practice
- MODULE 4: The Legal Framework for Workplace Safety and Health - Accessing guidance
- MODULE 5: Common hazards - chemical, machinery, manual handling, electrical, noise, fire, slipping, tripping and falling
- MODULE 6: Active monitoring -Communication skills in relation to safety and health
- MODULE 7: Safety Audits - Management reviews
- MODULE 8: Specialised Hazards (optional but company specific)
Educational Objectives
Candidates will be able to:
- apply and understand management to health and safety issues.
- recognise and assess risk from health and safety hazards in the workplace.
- take account of risks from work activities arising from human factors.
- identify information and training relevant to successful safety management
- communicate effectively on health an safety issues.
Candidates will understand:
- the importance of active monitoring.
- what actions should be taken when incidents involving injury or damage occur.
- the main legal responsibilities of employers and managers
Assessment
A practical assignment will be carried out relevant to the candidate’s workplace.
Examination
A multi-choice question exam paper will be undertaken on the final day of the course.
